I always love the “Things I Bought This Month” posts from other bloggers. It’s the same as looking at what is in their shopping cart as they pass by me at the store or peeping at someone’s nightstand on IG.

What I Bought This Month

This month saw more home purchases than past. We moved into our new home recently, so there are plenty of finishing touches that I am excited to share. I also have a lot of easy DIYs planned so keep an eye out for that. And by easy I don’t mean ‘easy for the best DIYer that you see on HGTV’. Think more along the lines of DIY projects that you can achieve during naptime over a week.

Also on the list this month are some cold weather favorites. Yes, those words came out of my mouth. I hope to share our whole moving story, but for now I am focusing on keeping my Floridian babies from freezing during all this snowfall northern Virginia has seen this winter. I’m also focusing on how I can look less like a bag lady and more like an effortlessly chic mom at school pick up.

  1. Loloi Rug - Loloi rugs are the perfect modest price point. They look great, cover up all the stains that follow kids, and are a great quality.

  2. Mock Neck Sweater - I bought a turtle neck and it was just…bad. This mock neck provides great coverage for the neck without making me feel like a lollipop. Runs a bit oversized - I wear a small.

  3. Dropps laundry pods - I am always looking for sustainable household items and this is my favorite by far. I swear the laundry has never smelled so fresh. Plus, its plant based and comes in low waste packaging.

  4. Leather tissue box cover - (say this in a Chandler voice) Could tissue boxes BE any less appealing? These leather boxes make a household essential less of an eye sore.

  5. Canvas - I loved the earthy colors in this canvas, but I loved that it goes beautifully with the Loloi rug above. It’s dreamy - trust me!

  6. Dimmable lamp - Don’t let this unassuming lamp fool you, it is versatile. I ended up putting these on the side tables in the primary bed, but I also tried them on the dining room buffet and the foyer table and they looked perfect in each spot!

    TIP: purchases like these are perfect because once I decided to swap the primary bedside lamps, I know they have multiple places in which I can repurpose them + don’t forget you need dimmable bulbs too

  7. Cuticle care stick - The cold air has been rough on my hands and feet. Applying this cuticle balm every other night right before bed has reinvigorated that delicate skin.

  8. Cardigan coat - This is the perfect layer to throw over monochromatic sweats to add some pizazz to an otherwise basic outfit.

  9. It Ends With Us - This might be my favorite book of all time. The whole time I was wondering who it was going to end with per the title of the book, and that moment did not disappoint.

  10. Kids snow pants - I struggle to find pants that will fit both my boys - one is long and lean the other is big and tall. These pants hit the mark and are great for playing in the snow.

  11. Stair organizer - We didn’t have bedrooms upstairs in our old house, so I wasn’t aware of how much stuff would have to go up the stairs on a daily basis. This organizer gives us a place to keep it all and it doesn’t fall off the stairs. Shout out to Arin Solange at Home for this idea!

  12. Cube ottoman - This is a great accessory for our home. Right now it is in the living room, but it could be used as a stool for a vanity or side table too.

Gifts for Preschoolers

My middle son currently falls in the preschooler age group. To be clear, I consider preschooler age to be 3+. At this age, there is a lot of intention in the way that children play. There is also an added sense of responsibility and ownership, so kids are more likely to take better care of their things at this age. In addition, they are also more easily able to play with gifts with a lot of pieces and not eat them or lose them immediately. All that being said, I do not love toys with a bunch of pieces, so I kept those to a minimum.

A quick note - my older kids are both boys so the gifts skew more “boy gift”. However, I don’t subscribe to the thought that toys are gender specific, but if you were looking for an review on the LOL dolls, etc., I got nothing.

2020 Gift Guide

One

Drones for kids. What could go wrong? I can see my kids chasing these around the backyard for a long time.

Two

Playing make believe with my kids is one of my favorite things. And they know that coffee is one of my favorite things.

Three

Like I said, kids this age have a better sense of ownership. Having their own bag to put their things is a practical option for a safe place for their goodies. And if they go to school, this gift can pull double duty!

Four

I take picture of my kids relentlessly. Since they are little sponges, they want to do everything that I do. It is also so fun to see pictures from their perspective.

Five

This gift is for all ages really, but by preschool age most kids have the hand eye coordination to really chase and pop bubbles with a fervor.

Six

This breaks my “many pieces rule”, but we have this and the kids really like it. I use it for homeschool to do color sorting relays, and it is a great way to start introducing different fruits and vegetables.

The title says it all. In addition, it is so important to me as a White mother to show my boys people who look different from them doing kick ass things.

This little Nerf blaster is a great size for little hands. My older son got it for his 4th birthday, and he carried it around for days. Pro tip: buy the extra darts too.

This is the Amazon version of the hat that you see all over Instagram. The quality is great. And it fits my 3 and 4 yo perfectly - one of whom has a pretty sizable head.

All three of my kids have these blankets. They have an option for personalization as well. They are a Toddler to Teen version, so your kid will get a lot of use from them. Also, they are so soft!

Eleven

Dress up is a favorite in our house. Seeing the kids pretend to have different jobs is always fun because you get to see how they interpret certain jobs. For example, whenever we play doctor, my kids ALWAYS give me a shot. I guess that is all doctors do to them (thankfully)!

Twelve

Kid water bottles are a real pain point. They are either recalled or always dirty or spilling. These are the most durable and stylish option there is. They are a bit heavy as they are made of the insulated Yeti material. However, spills are a minimum so I am happy.

Thirteen

On your mark, get set, BAKE! I have one sous chef who got this set last year. He loves it. Plus, it comes with kids size tongs that are perfect for fine motor activities and kid knives perfect for teaching how to cut.

Fourteen

We just discovered My Little Pony on Netflix. I was a fan as a kid, so it gives me nice nostaligia vibes. These little figurines might need to make an appearance to diversify all the excavators and muscle cars that we have.

Fifteen

As my kids transition from baby rooms to toddler rooms, I always try to add some sort of tent/play place for them. It is a safe place to hang and a fun place to play when they want to welcome others into their space. Read more about transitioning to a preschooler room.

Sixteen

Devices are just a reality of life for kids. Protect yours with this case. It has kid size handles, a kickstand, and comes in a bunch of colors. I feel so much better when they carry their iPad with this case on.

Seventeen

This book is so fun. It has directions like ‘tap here’, but it also encourages kids to make it a new adventure each time that they read it. Really cool.

Eighteen

Prepare to hear “Roger that” and “Over” on repeat all day. My kids love these. They have decent range too!

Nineteen

For your artistic kid who isn’t interested in getting messy all the time.

Twenty

We have the robot version of these tinker toys, and they are great. You can put the pieces together in an endless number of ways to create new spaceships all the time. Then blast off on another imaginary journey!

Twenty-one

Water beads are a fun science experiment and then a modern water balloon fight. Just being realistic here. These are also biodegradable so you don’t have to worry as much about clean up!

Twenty-two

This might be a bit advanced for preschooler, so keep it in a safer place. We like to read a few pages before bed. My kids have seen the first Harry Potter movie, so they identify with it. And I love that they get to experience the magic and I get a pretty book out of it!

Twenty-three

Classic Hot Wheels. You have them. Kids love them. That’s all.

Twenty-four

This might be a bit advanced for preschool aged kids, but I love this book so much that I added it anyway! Hold it for your daughter until she gets older. Every millennial girl had this book that showed you how your boobs would grow, how to put in a tampon, and all about pimples. It is THE BEST book for growing girls.

Before I go into a bit of detail on each item, I cannot say enough that the one thing that mom wants is a break. A guilt-free, relaxing, break where she only has to think about herself instead of everyone else first. If you can swing that, do it. If not, have someone else take the kids for an afternoon and turn your bedroom into a spa. Dim the lights, enjoy a hot shower, throw on a cozy robe, paint your nails, apply self tanner, etc. Give mom some time to just be a woman.

For my family, Easter basket gifts have become a sort of symbolic way to welcome warm weather and reinvigorate a sense of play. For those reasons, I gravitate toward Easter basket stuffers that are useful rather than cheap or something that will be lost or tossed within a few days. I always try to have a toy that is one piece with a lot of elements that the kids can use for travel, but I only have to pack one thing. This one is a great Easter basket stuffer with these bright colors! I think traveling and road trips are on the horizon again!!

What can I use instead of Easter baskets?

Festive baskets are great, but I prefer that anything that comes into my house serves a purpose beyond taking a room in the attic. If you feel the same way, consider stuffing rain boots, pool floats, new backpacks or outdoor toys. Don’t forget the crinkle paper or tissue paper at the bottom to fill out the item and make it look like the basket is overfilling with Easter basket stuffers without spending an arm and a leg. Homeschooling my kids has opened my eyes to how playing and learning really walk hand in hand. Kids are naturally inquisitive. And while the constant “why?” can become annoying, it is never lost on me that they are just trying to take in the world around them. These toys are sure to help them on their educational journey.

One

We have all seen the Magnatiles that older kids love. This is a block version geared towards younger kids. The block shapes are easier to grasp. I honestly think my older kids would enjoy creating things with these magnetic blocks also.

Two

We love reading. National Geographic has a great selection of educational books with content geared towards kids written in a way that doesn’t dumb anything down. The basics are explained in a way that answers questions fully. It’s refreshing.

Three

Puzzles are a great way to work on fine motor and attention to detail. This puzzle only has 70 pieces and each state is a different color so it would be great for younger children!

Four

The Rocktopus soundtrack is always playing in my household. This is a great option for many ages - my 1 year old puts the instrument pieces into the holes and my older boys play the actual games. This is about as musical as I get.

My boys currently fall in the preschooler age group. To be clear, I consider preschooler age to be 3+. At this age, there is a lot of intention in the way that children play. There is also an added sense of responsibility and ownership, so kids are more likely to take better care of their things at this age. In addition, they are also more easily able to play with gifts with a lot of pieces and not eat them or lose them immediately. All that being said, I do not love toys with a bunch of pieces, so I kept those to a minimum.

A quick notes - my older kids are both boys so the gifts skew more “boy gift”. However, I don’t subscribe to the thought that toys are generally gender specific, but if you were looking for an review on the LOL dolls, etc., I got nothing.

Drones for kids. What could go wrong? I can see my kids chasing these around the backyard for a long time.

Two

Playing make believe with my kids is one of my favorite things. And they know that coffee is one of my favorite things.

Three

Like I said, kids this age have a better sense of ownership. Having their own bag to put their things is a practical option for a safe place for their goodies. And if they go to school, this gift can pull double duty!

I take picture of my kids relentlessly. Since they are little sponges, they want to do everything that I do. It is also so fun to see pictures from their perspective.

Kid water bottles are a real pain point. They are either recalled or always dirty or spilling. These are the most durable and stylish option there is. They are a bit heavy as they are made of the insulated Yeti material. However, spills are a minimum so I am happy.

On your mark, get set, BAKE! I have one sous chef who got this set last year. He loves it. Plus, it comes with kids size tongs that are perfect for fine motor activities and kid knives perfect for teaching how to cut.

We just discovered My Little Pony on Netflix. I was a fan as a kid, so it gives me nice nostaligia vibes. These little figurines might need to make an appearance to diversify all the excavators and muscle cars that we have.

This might be a bit advanced for preschool aged kids, but I love this book so much that I added it anyway! Hold it for your daughter until she gets older. Every millennial girl had this book that showed you how your boobs would grow, how to put in a tampon, and all about pimples. It is THE BEST book for growing girls.

I currently have a 3 year old and 4.5 year old. Active is the only word to describe them. They are constantly moving, thinking, running, jumping, and finding new ways to turn my house into Wrestlemania.

I love to gift items that kids will either play with for hours on end or find new ways to use all the time. Everything on this list either already sits in my home or my kids will be getting this year. So here’s the run down on each item.

One

I play on gifting this to all the kids this year as their big gift. The kids are basically monkeys and this pricetag will pretty much take over our entire budget, but the possibilities are endless. I can see it being used as a pirate ship and someone is walking the plank or a balance beam with lava below.

Two

I gave this to my then 2 year old last year, and he has grown to love it over the bast year. And his older brother plays with it also. If you are thinking of getting an older child a bike, this scooter is a great alternative for a younger sibling.

Three

I love the sensory opportunity this provides. We definitely have moments when a little alone time is called for, and I think this Harkala will be the new coveted alone spot.

Hear me out. For the amount of play that my kids get out of it, it is certainly worth the investment. Storage is easy as it comes with its own bag and the stakes to secure it to the ground go in there. And the fan to blow it up is easy to work. The entire thing inflates in less than a minute. AND if you live where it gets too cold to play outside, how much fun would this be in a basement?

We have a pretty basic water table, and it gets used multiple times a day. No exaggeration. My kids love it. Again, I “eat” water soups all the time. This table looks especially fun with the pulley system it has.

What are the best baby gifts to give?

Shopping for really little babies is hard. Generally speaking, a useful gift for them would be swaddles or diapers. And parents typically have a preference for their child when it comes to things like that. I have yet to hear a bad thing about the brand of onesie that I included here (#14), hence its exception for this gift guide.

However, I try to stick with things that can pull double duty when I gift things to someone with a baby. By that I mean, toys that double as decor (#12). Or something that can grow with the child (#6).

If you’re not a parent it can be hard to realize the growth that happens in the first year. So while a newborn won’t love a Pottery Barn chair (#11) , they will be climbing all over it in a few months. And then they will mindlessly watch all their shows from that spot.

I also like to gift toys that help develop some sort of skill. For example, #10 helps small babies in their carseats with hand eye coordination. And #9 helps develop their grip.

If you’re gifting more with the parents in mind, consider something that will help when it comes time to clean up (#8) or something to contain their babe while they make dinner or run to the bathroom ( #15) or something to make sure their baby isn’t slipping and sliding all over the tub (#2).

In addition to the piggy bank, each child gets a step stool. They are great once they use the potty and sink and also fun for new movers to climb on!

Six

There is an awkward stage between about 4 months - 6/7 months where the baby is able to hold their head up and sit, but they can’t crawl yet. So popping them in this activity center when you need a minute to do something is a great option. And then as they grow it turns int 2 other kinds of activity tables. Triple-whammy!

Seven

Rounding out the trifecta of gifts my mom gives the kids is the growth chart for each child with their name on it. It is fun to watch them grow when they are really young, and then as they get older they ask you to measure them to see how close they are to your height. [pause for tears]

Eight

Sometimes we parents get sick of the primary colors. This mat is neutral a beautiful and EASILY CLEANED. Finally, a refined option to the typical play mats.

Nine

All my kids (1 - 4.5 yo) currently play with these. They are great for developing a baby’s grip and the characters are fun as the kids get older and recognize them more.

Ten

I am of the renegade Rock n Play era. I put this on the Rock n Play and the kids would rock and play [see what I did there?] with this while I made dinner or did my makeup. It can also be attached to carseats, etc. Although most carseats say that anything attached to them is unsafe. So maybe just when they aren’t actually in the car.

A true classic. We’ve gotten one chair for each of my kids, and seeing all three lined up is one of my all time favorite sites. They are durable and washable. And the customization options are endless.

Twelve

Another option that is great for all ages. My daughter has one of these that isn’t magnetic as decor in her room. But I think an older child would love to try to build different things with this magnetic option. Dual purpose!

Thirteen

All my kids (1 - 4.5 yo) play with these eggs as well. The baby works on her grip and the older boys work on matching and colors. But be aware, these pieces will get momentarily lost! But they always show up eventually!

Fourteen

I have never personally owned anything from Kyte, but I always hear the best things. And they look SO soft. If you’re in the market for someone else (or yourself) they have some women’s options too.

Fifteen

This is a game changer for me. I literally put my one year old in this everyday so that I can make dinner. We’ve got a soft mat underneath it and throw in a bunch of age appropriate toys. It is the perfect size so that she can walk a little and have room to explore but not be roaming the house freely.

Sixteen

In addition to being a cool gift for a preschooler, I could see these being really cool decor in a gender neutral nursery.

Seventeen

I have the old school tree version of this zebra, but the colors and design of this one are great for kids. I always recommend one of these for anyone looking to give a great gift, but they don’t know much about the individual child.

For my daughter’s first birthday, I got us these matching bracelets. I love them. They are stylish, great quality, and well priced. And her’s is so tiny; it is priceless.

Nineteen

You can’t go wrong with a book. Preferably a book that showcases BIPOC and women in roles typically held by men. Break down those barriers!

Twenty

Stacking cups are another gift that is great for many ages. Babies can get a few cups stacked, but the older kids will love to build towers. And then the baby can knock them down!

A final note

A last word of advice. If any of these don’t seem right, you can never go wrong with a kids book (board book if they’re little) and a coordinating stuffed animal.
