Allergy Friendly Trick or Treating

Trick or treating with food allergies is tough. There is a delicate balance that has to be struck between making sure that your child enjoys the holiday like any other kid and ensuring that they won’t go into anaphylaxis. Sounds fun, right?

Before I had a child with food allergies, I didn’t quite understand. Luckily, my son’s nut allergies are ingestion based. Some people have allergies so severe that particles in the air are enough to send them to the hospital. Like most things these days, please treat others with empathy this Halloween. A great way to do that is through the Teal Pumpkin Project created by FARE, Food Allergy Research & Education.

Teal Pumpkin Project

The Teal Pumpkin Project strives to make Halloween safer for those living with food allergies by encouraging any home giving out candy to also offer non-candy Halloween favors. The goal is inclusivity. Children with food allergies are often separated from their peers (think separate tables in the cafeteria) for their safety. It is honestly more taxing on the parents than the child, but it still hurts.

What to do to

FARE has made supporting the Teal Pumpkin Project simple! You can either put a teal pumpkin or sign in front of your home. This is a Batman signal to all allergy parents that they can temporarily breathe a sigh of relief at your house.

FARE offers lots of resources for allergy free trick or treating to make this easy and fun for the whole family! They have stencils with which to paint your teal pumpkin, stickers, yard signs, printable activities and a complete guide on how to speak to children about food allergies and offering allergy free treats on Halloween.

Allergy free trick or treat ideas

There are plenty of allergy friendly trick or treat ideas! Your best option is to offer non candy Halloween favors in addition to the traditional candies. Just like every family isn’t expecting king size Snickers at your house, allergy parents are not expecting complete LEGO sets. We are hoping for any little toy that might excite the kids as much as a candy bar.

You might also already be unknowingly offering allergen friendly candy at Halloween. It is on each allergy parent to confirm ingredients, manufacturing guidelines, etc. for their child, but typically speaking the candies below are considered “safe”.

As the parent of an allergic child, THANK YOU. Thank you for taking the time to educate yourself on how to include my child. Thank you for making the effort. Thank you for leading with empathy.

Influenced: 7 Recent Purchases + Honest Reviews

influenced recent purchases and honest reviews - pin (1).png

This post contains affiliate links.

I can’t deny it - I spend too much time on Instagram. As a SAHM sometimes it feels like the only people I get to talk to are the ones in my phone.

With that being the case, I am also subject to A LOT of targeted ads and sponsored content. Some of those ads have resonated with me enough to purchase the products.

Here are 7 recent purchases and my honest reviews of each.

Grillo Pickles (7/10)

Lauren McBride shared these pickles recently and raved about them. I am a pickle person so when I saw them at Costco, I gave them a shot. No doubt they are great pickles, but the plain flavor is only marginally better than typical store-bought ones. I do like how you can see all the herbs floating in the liquid. It makes the flavor more intense. I am excited to try the spicy ones - maybe those will blow my mind.

Buy them at Amazon, Target, or Whole Foods.

Gimme Beauty Hair Ties (10/10)

I struggle with losing my hair ties and also feeling like hair ties are pulling my hair out constantly. I had seen ad after ad for these hair ties. After visiting the site, I saw that one pack is $12 but with all the coupon codes available, it came to $8. I figured I would give it a shot.

These hair ties are AMAZING. I have tried them every which way - running, swimming, stretching them out, letting my kids play with them - and they still have great elasticity. I struggled to understand how these ties could be better than all the Goody ones I grab at Target, but it is the material that makes them great. If you have a baby girl, the elastic is kind of like the material that goes around her head on the tiny hair bows.

Olive and June (9/10)

I am a tried and true Essie gel couture kind of girl. That stuff lasts, and honestly it still reign supreme. Olive and June is a close second. Whereas Essie gel couture will last a full 7 days chip free, Olive and June will get me 5 maybe 6.

Where the Olive and June brand really stands out is the brush. It is the perfect width to control it easily and glide smoothly. In addition to that, Olive and June is “ 7-free which means [it is] free of the seven harmful chemicals commonly found in nail polishes including dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, TPHP or xylene.”

If I see a color that I like only available in Olive and June, I wouldn’t hesitant to buy this again.

Available at Olive and June and a limited selection at Target.

THE Amazon Nightgown Dress (2/10)

The dress was all over the place. It was supposed to be chic but cozy. I beg to differ.

I tried to make this work. I tried to feel chic, but I couldn’t shake the bag lady vibes. I could see this working well on a very tall and very thin woman. I am neither, so it went back. But the quality was very good.

Boyfriend Jeans (6/10)

Same story here. I wanted to give off that nonchalant, cool mom vibe with the added bonus of not needing to shave my legs. I got these boyfriend jeans from Amazon, and all things considered it was a good experience. They had a good amount of distressing, enough elastic for me to bend to pick up kids, and no weird jeans smell.

My body just wasn’t made for this style. For it to look effortless and chic I would have to do my hair to make the look more feminine, and I’m just not ready to commit to that.

Again, very tall and very thin women - this may be for you!

DivvyUp Socks (10/10)

These are the socks that are advertised heavily around Father’s Day with all the kids faces on them. I thought, why not?! And they do not disappoint. The quality is good and the colors are vibrant. My kids get a kick out of seeing themselves and my husband loves to wear them. Win-win. Highly recommend.

You can also customize with your company logo or purchase some designs of their own too.

Equilibria CBD (9/10)

I have been dealing with enough anxiety that I wanted to try something, but not enough that I feel like I need to seek outside help. (Side bar: There is nothing wrong with seeking outside help. Always talk to someone if you need help.) After seeing ads highlighting the calming effects of CBD, I decided to use another coupon code to give it a shot.

I was torn between the oil and the soft gels but I went with the oil thinking that it would have a more immediate effect which is appealing to me as someone whose anxiety sneaks up and hits them on the head quickly. At the first sign of anxiety, I grab my dropper and take about half the dropper. (Equilibria offers guidance on determining dosage once you get your package.)

I wouldn’t say that I feel much relief in the moment. Where I do see A LOT of improvement is in my quality of sleep. I sleep far more soundly when I take CBD in the late afternoon or early evening than if I do not take any.

The only big drawback for me is that the oil irritates my throat a bit. If I purchase again (this is honestly a luxury product for me not a necessity so my budget will determine if I purchase again), I would opt for the soft gels.

15 Most Used Items During Quarantine (So Far)

Going on 5 months of quarantine and self isolation here, so I’m getting pretty good at this. Here are some of the things that are making my life better during this crazy time!

Fashion

Aerie Wrap Bathing Suit - I’ve been on my soapbox about this suit before, but it is the perfect mom suit. It is flattering but still has a little sex appeal. Just double knot the tie wrap so that your kid doesn’t expose you!

Outdoor Voices Tech Sweat leggings - These are without a doubt the most comfortable workout pants. They are extremely lightweight, but they still provide compression.

Warby Parker Maeve glasses - Affordable, online ordering, stylish, ‘nuff said.

Beauty

Ilia serum/tinted moisturizer with SPF - I have been using this for 2 weeks. It is a triple whammy as a day face serum, tinted moisturizer, and SPF. If I want a bit more coverage, I’ll mix in a tiny pump of foundation with this.

Kiehl’s mini mask set - I love trying new masks, but I don’t like committing to any one. This set has standard face masks and overnight masks. I will whip one out once a week to give myself a little dose of luxury.

Working Hands balm - My hands were a NIGHTMARE before this stuff. Cracked, peeling, and painful. I just use a smidge of this overnight, and I wake up with smooth hands again!

Home

Laminator - This has been huge in helping me prepare all my kids’ homeschooling material. As an added bonus, feeding things through the laminator and retrieving a warm sheet on the other side is super satisfying. This one comes with a paper cutter on top, cold and hot settings, and corner rounders. I think this is the best deal on Amazon for a laminator - I did the research.

Modern Adirondack - Though these Target chairs took forever and a few phone calls to arrive, they are perfect. Easy to assemble, comfortable, and sleek. Color availability looks limited now!

Boom bluetooth speaker - Anyone else having random dance parties as mood boosters? Inside, outside, pool, this thing goes everywhere with us. DJ Boom, at your service.

Instant Pot - I resisted the hype for awhile, but I recently figured out how to properly cook frozen chicken in the Instant Pot, and it really is a game changer.

Kids

The Danish Way of Parenting Book - I wrote a full review of this book here. Best parenting book I’ve read to date.

Kids Yeti bottle - My kids recently discovered the joy of cold water, and I don’t love having to deal with sweating bottles and kids needing refills constantly because the water isn’t cold enough. Problem solved with this bottle.

Baby bath seat - All of my children have been slippery little seals in the tub - no one likes to sit on their own as a little one. This chair helps to support and contain your littlest bathers.

Wooden number puzzle - I love this toy because it has different activities for different levels. My older son does more of the number work, and my younger son does the color and shape matching.

10 Things From Around Your House to Use in Your Homeschool

You’ve decided to homeschool for the 2020-2021 school year! Congrats!

You’re starting school virtually for the 2020-2021 school year! Congrats!

No matter your circumstances, if you need to have an area in your house dedicated to learning, here are some items to collect from around the house to include in your classroom.

Small table

Kids write best when they can have their feet on the ground. While the kitchen table might be more feasible, if you can get a small table, it will help little people control things better. We have this IKEA table and I painted it with regular household paint.

Tent

This is a trick that I learned from my son’s first year at preschool. When your child is having a tantrum, have them cozy up inside their tent and calm down. A quiet place where they can think about their actions is invaluable.

Chalkboards/Dry Erase Boards

I remember the excitement I used to feel when I got to write on the whiteboards at school. I was a kid in a candy shop! When my guys are not interested in writing with pencil and paper, I whip these out and they are far more interested and likely to participate.

THE IKEA cart

Is there anything this cart can’t do? Right now we are using ours to house educational games and things with a lot of pieces - think Leapfrogs and puzzles. In the future I may use it as a drying rack for artwork or to house our art supplies.

Spill Proof Mat

We will be doing a lot of our messy things on carpet, so I am putting down a mat to help mitigate the mess. I have been eyeing this one by the House of Noa, but right now I just have these letter mats down. A mat meant to go under a highchair would work just as well too! Heck, even a large mat meant for pets - whatever you’ve got!

Book Shelves + Books

Reading is key for little kids so I like to always have books within an arms reach. I also love to use books as decor. You can get an instant splash of color on a wall if you set up some floating bookshelves on which to display books. I ordered these IKEA shelves to do just that.

Here’s some eye candy if you need a little inspiration.

Storage

Just like any classroom, there are a lot of things that you need - teaching materials, pencils, paper, markers, glue, beads, and the list goes on and on. Depending on how you will set up your learning, this storage could be stationery (if you have a room dedicated to learning) or on wheels if you will be learning all over the house. Diana at The Gray Ruby Diaries recommends this cart on wheels to house all the things you may need on the go.

Cushions

I scooped up two cushions from Amazon to keep in our classroom. Having a designated spot for each child to sit when they need to listen is helpful. They are also used in the tent when they need a break. You could grab two large pillows from the living room too!

Corkboard and clothespins for artwork

The pride on a kid’s face when they see their artwork on display is so genuine. I make sure to have some way to showcase all their artwork for the week. I have used a corkboard to do some, but I also just hang a ribbon on the wall using a push pin and hang art on that. Double whammy of decor and art display. The corkboard could also be used to display the days of the week, weather, your schedule, etc.

iPad + Kids cover

Honestly, I don’t view screen time as a bad thing. I view it as a tool. My kids are growing up in an age where there are screens EVERYWHERE. They need to know how to use them properly from go. I have a few learning apps on the iPads that they use and we also use YouTube all the time for yoga videos, dance breaks, and story telling. I recommend getting a kids cover with a handle for your device. The number of times they have to carry it to me because they hit the wrong button is staggering so this helps protect it.

Summer Essentials for Busy Moms

Summer in Florida is hot. Really hot.

In general, I am pretty low maintenance. During the summertime, I take it down a few more notches. I don’t try to hard in the hair and makeup departments when I’m just going to sweat it away. I also don’t wear all my nicer clothes when I’m going to stink them up. So, this list below is pretty much on repeat until October.

Mother's Day Gift Guide + Simple DIYs

I can put a lot of beautiful things on a graphic, but let me tell you what mother’s really want on May 10. A break. We want a break. We want someone else to make the decisions. All of them. We want to sit somewhere (at home if we are still working through this global pandemic) and be as mindless as possible. That will vary for every mom. But I guarantee if you have breakfast in bed ready to go and offer a free afternoon, that will earn you rockstar status.

But, we also like things. So if you can’t offer time, here’s some shiny things to consider! And don’t forget to get the kids involved with some simple DIYs at the bottom of this page.

2 Keekaroo Peanut Changer - Literally just got to take this out of my middle child’s room and put it in the nursery. So excited for fewer sheets to wash!

3 + 4 Mascara + Primer - I’ve gotten several questions about what I use on my lashes lately. This is my go to recently. Adding primer really does help A LOT!

5 Target Toddler Shoe - Mornings go fast. My 3 year old can put this shoe on by himself . Boom.

6 Super Pigs -Twist on the three little pigs. My boys are loving it right now. Had it for two days, read it 6x loving it.

  2. Old Navy Tank - Make sure you get the high neck one. That way you won’t be flashing everyone when you pick up the kid army crawling through Costco.

  3. Madewell Tote - SPLURGE ALERT. But you won’t be disappointed. Wears well.

  4. 90 Degree by Reflex Leggings - Just as good as my Zella ones.

  5. Target mules - Instantly elevate an otherwise athleisure look.

  6. Maya Brenner Necklace - Another SPLURGE ALERT. This was my push present and I just kept adding initials as the kids came along.

  1. Adidas Cloudfoam sneakers - Light as a feather ( says “stiff as a board” in head.) Great for athleisure looks. Going to try mine out at Orangetheory too. Will report back.

  2. Stacker Ring - 14K gold for $38. I’ve worn mine for months in work outs, pools, the shower, etc. It is slightly pliable, but it always goes back to shape easily.

  3. Peek a Boo Forest - If you’ve got a 3-4 month old who wants to play but just isn’t coordinated enough yet, throw this book on their tummy. Minutes of fun!

  4. Mold Remover - I tried all the vinegar, baking soda, etc. but nothing works as well as this. I am EXTREMELY picky in the shower with cleanliness, and this checks off all the boxes. Seriously. It. Good.

  5. Ikea Stool - I’ve used this stool in the laundry room, as a stool for my toddler to get into his big kid bed, and as a side table. All that for $20.

  6. Amazon tee - Doesn’t flash anyone, doesn’t show sweat, isn’t tight. Perfect mom tee + on sale for 12 BUCKS. Run!

  1. J. Crew Factory Ear Jackets - These are my everyday earrings Edgy yet simple.

  2. Amazon Blanket - I bought this blanket as a gift exchange present at Christmas, and then I just kept it for myself. Nothing cozier, and for the price its incredible!

  3. Bounce House - I NEVER thought we would be a bounce house having family. I was wrong. My boys ( 2 + 3.5 yo) have been in it nearly daily since Christmas. My biggest hesitation was how much effort I assumed was required to get it upright, but it is easy to blow up with the motorized blower that comes with it.

  4. Elf Highlighter - I haven’t used any of the super pricey highlighters, but for the price this gets the job done. Plus they have lots of color options for nearly every skin tone.

  5. Smarty Pants Vitamins - All this allergy momma needed to see was “ FREE OF milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nut allergens, fish allergens, shellfish, soy, gluten, and wheat. No synthetic colors, artificial flavors, or artificial sweeteners.” Also, Brooks loves the taste!

  6. Outdoor Voices Tech Sweat Leggings - I am extremely particular about my workout pants. These are lightweight but still have compression to them. All the thumbs up.

  1. Wool Dryer Balls - I really just didn’t want to have to keep buying dryer sheets, so I looked for a reusable option. Added bonus - chemical free!

  2. Ikea Cutting Board - If you have toddlers, you are likely chopping food into teeny tiny bites at least three times a day. This board is huge, wraps around the edge of the counter, and is easy to clean. I wipe it clean throughout the day and clean it in the sink at the end of the night.

  3. Ponds Cold Cream - As a makeup remover, I give this a 7.5/10. As a facial cleanser and moisturizer, I give this a 15/10. It is extremely affordable and has been around for ages so it must be good!

  4. Amazon Hair Bows - When I had Reese, I expected to have her in huge bows 24/7. But I soon found out that I’m not into that look. These are the perfect size for her 3 month old melon. They come in a boatload of colors and the band that goes around her head is super soft.

  5. Target Sweater - I have been wearing this $25 sweater all “winter” (read: FL winter). It is the perfect length for leggings (Spanx faux leather leggings for an elevated casual dinner vibe). It is also the softest sweater I have found this season.

  6. Allergy Band - My nut allergy son wears these whenever we go out. That way if someone gives him something edible, they will likely see the band on his wrist and think twice. It is also a great reminder to him to talk about his allergy. He is only 3, but he knows to tell people that he has a peanut allergy.

  1. Kraft Paper - The easiest tablecloth you can imagine. It also eliminates the need for place cards - just write on it with a Sharpie. And when clean up comes, just roll it up.

  2. If you don’t have at least two crockpots going on Thanksgiving, you need to work on your delegation skills.

  3. If you live somewhere with pine cones, go outside and gather some up. Throw them around and instant decor for free.
